Shelter Dogs: Adopt a Man’s Best Friend Today

Shelter Dogs: Adopt a Man’s Best Friend Today

Attention: Stay tuned to the end for a special Clubpets E-store surprise for all adopted pet owners!

Despite how developed and urbanised Singapore’s landscape is, you’d be surprised by the number of strays living among our concrete constructions.

While stray dogs might be a less common sighting, out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind. The majority of stray dogs are typically found in construction sites or densely vegetated areas. In any case, those conditions aren’t safe for them.

Although valiant efforts to control the local stray population have been taken under the Trap-Neuter-Release Program, it’s difficult to countermeasure the population growth entirely. Moreover, after being released, these doggos still need a good home.

Shelter Dogs: Adopt a Man’s Best Friend Today

Regardless of a dog’s pedigree or history, we can all agree that our stray and community animals deserve better. All they want is just a loving, fur-ever home with their favourite hoomans to spend their days with — and maybe, just maybe, you could just be their fur-ever family.

Apart from adoptions, donating, sponsoring or even volunteering at animal rescue and welfare organisations and shelters helps to make a huge, paw-sitive difference!

Dog Adoption Centres to Check Out

1.    Forget Me Not

Just like the eponymous flower, Forget-Me-Not, this dog shelter is unforgettable. They trace their origins from an owner who was previously caring for a group of dogs. Unfortunately, he came under fire by the media for reasons and had to relinquish the dogs from his care.

What’s even more unfortunate was that these dogs were labelled as “aggressive” and hence, unadoptable. Needless to say, the outlook for these pooches wasn’t looking too bright.

In response to this crisis, a team of selfless, caring individuals banded together and quickly formed Forget Me Not to take in these “aggressive” dogs. And of course, with plenty of love, care and affection, these “aggressive” dogs blossomed into affectionate, playful and loving pooches.

Although new to the online sphere, Just For Paw’s is strong regardless ever since they began operations 27 years ago. What started as an independent pursuit to rescue forgotten and neglected dogs in Singapore, the private shelter has since blossomed favourably among the animal lover community.

With an animated and supportive community, head on over to their Facebook to stay up-to-date with all their latest activities and events.

3. Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD)

An entirely volunteer-run organisation, Save Our Street Dogs is dedicated to the rescue of Singapore’s street dogs. With a strong opposition towards culling, their mission is to rehabilitate and rehome strays across the country.

Together with another shelter, Noah’s Ark, both shelters work together to operate the largest Trap-Neuter Release (TNR) program on Jurong Island. Due to work safety reasons, many of these neutered dogs cannot be released and are instead relocated and maintained by full-time workers from both shelters.

If you wish to volunteer, foster (for min. 2 months), donate or adopt a pupper today, take a look at the list of beautiful canines under their care today. Adoption fees under SOSD are $300, covering the cost of microchipping, three vaccinations, sterilisation and administration.

All talk and no action will get you nowhere, that’s why the team at Action For Singapore Dogs possess a fervent and motivated drive to improve the welfare of stray and abandoned dogs in Singapore. Having started as a non-profit organisation in 2000 to become a registered charity today, they’ve come a long way in bettering the lives of our street fidos.

Since then, they’ve rescued over 3000 dogs and house 150 dogs at present — either at the Adoption Rescue Centre (ARC) or in foster homes. You can view their list of adoptable furbabies here.

This is exactly what Exclusively Mongrels stands for; with a vibrant community and active following, their team is committed to rehoming and assimilating every mongrel into their fur-ever home, no matter how many tries it takes.

6. MercyLight Animal Rescue and Sanctuary

By mercy through faith, the team at MercyLight Animal Rescue and Sanctuary is doing an amazing job at rescuing and rehoming many stray dogs all over Singapore.

Their humble beginnings started in 2009, when a group of kindhearted volunteers spotted an emaciated dog roaming around an industrial area. Heartbroken by this sight, they quickly dabao’d (order takeaway) a packet of chicken rice and the rest was history. They soon began feeding over 50 dogs in a few locations daily.

Believing that every dog is a blessing, all their dogs are aptly referred to as Blessing. Despite the shelter’s tough operation demands, nothing is more rewarding than seeing a Blessing happily find their special hooman family.

Consider blessing your life with a Blessing today, or get involved with other ways through feeding, fostering, sponsoring and volunteering.

Some Honourable Mentions

1.    Voices For Animals (VFA)

Shelter Dogs: Adopt a Man’s Best Friend Today

Source: Voices For Animals

Voices For Animals is one of the more unique animal rescue initiatives currently in operation. Led by a group dedicated to animal welfare, they are actively involved in rescuing all kinds of animals in need. However, more importantly, they specialise in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming retired breeding dogs.

Hence, their rescue efforts often include intervening in puppy mills or unlawful breeding homes to save those pitiful pups from their personal hell. As a result, VFA’s work is crucial to stopping illegal dog breeding in Singapore. In return, their efforts give owners a chance to adopt potential purebreds that have to be bought otherwise.

However, DO NOTE that the available breeds for adoption are subject to their rescue operations. They are not a breeding service for your desired pedigree.

Follow their Facebook and Instagram to be updated on recently-rescued breeds (for dogs) or other animals available for adoption. You can also donate here.

2. Animal Lovers League (ALL)

Animal Lovers League is a registered charity and shelter housing over 500 dogs and cats consisting of a variety of rescue backgrounds of strays, abandoned, traumatised and abused animals.

Moreover, as a strictly no-kill shelter, their objective is to raise awareness and encourage members of the public to adopt, and not shop. Not to mention, adoption is completely free because founders Cathy and Mohan don’t believe in putting a price tag on their animals. They are all priceless.

Given the sheer scale of animal rescues under their watch, they need every help they can get in the form of donations, sponsors, fostering and volunteers. Otherwise, if you’re ready and committed to welcome a new fluffy companion into your abode, learn how you can adopt here.

3. Metta Cats & Dogs Sanctuary

Shelter Dogs: Adopt a Man’s Best Friend Today

Last but not least, Metta Cats & Dogs Sanctuary is one of the more underrated and independently-managed animal rescues out there. Initially started as a project of love by the late Mdm Lee Siew Ying, the non-profit organisation has since been taken over by her son, Terry.

Established in 1999, it’s one of the longest-running rescues in Singapore that started with rescuing 50 cats to over 200 dogs and cats. With “metta” meaning “loving kindness” in the Pali language, Mdm Lee’s goal was to emphasise and uphold the special bond shared between humans and animals.

Do consider supporting their efforts through donations and participating in their fundraising because they heavily rely on them to survive. The monthly operation costs alone can total up to $26,000. Every little penny is greatly appreciated. You can donate here.
